Summary

This grant program offers funding in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, specifically within a select four‑county region known for its tight‑knit communities. Nonprofit organizations, public schools, and local government entities based in that region are eligible to apply. The funds are intended to support grassroots, community‑focused initiatives that promote health, wellness, resilience, and public safety.

There are two main funding streams available. One stream offers small grants of up to $2,500 each, with a total pool of $15,000. These grants are designed to enable local groups to start or expand projects such as food access efforts, recreational or wellness programs, outreach initiatives, or improvements that address identified health needs in the community. This cycle repeats each year, and proposals are reviewed with an eye toward immediate benefit and longer‑term sustainability .

The second stream is a targeted emergency services funding program, also available annually. Here, volunteer firefighters, EMS teams, and search and rescue organizations within the same region can apply for awards up to $5,000 each. The total available funding is $50,000, and applicants must match half of the requested amount. The intent is to fund equipment, training, or gear that enhances frontline emergency services for residents and visitors.

Both opportunities prioritize projects rooted in system‑thinking and collaboration, aiming to reach underserved populations and build community capacity in meaningful ways. Applicants must demonstrate appropriate organizational structure, financial accountability, and a clear plan for how the project will benefit local residents. While small businesses or individuals are not eligible, public sector and nonprofit groups serving that region are welcome to apply.

Through these complementary programs, organizations across the region can address public health and emergency preparedness needs with relatively modest but impactful support. Funding decisions focus on projects that can show practical results and lasting value for the community.
