Summary

This grant opportunity is open to tax‑exempt nonprofit organizations with a presence in the Great Lakes region and metropolitan Detroit.  Applicants must have 501(c)(3) status, an annual revenue of at least six figures, and a commitment to non‑discrimination.  Organizations should be prepared to provide 990 returns or CPA‑reviewed financial statements appropriate to their contribution level and must request at least five figures in funding.  Grants are not awarded to individuals or for‑profit businesses, and certain highly specialized research initiatives are by invitation only.

Funding priorities span several thematic areas.  Environmental initiatives focus on preserving the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem and supporting communities and economies that depend on these waters.  Projects are evaluated through climate and environmental justice lenses to ensure that the voices of those most affected by climate change and pollution are central to decision‑making.  In the arts, the opportunity supports theatres, symphonies, museums and similar institutions in urban counties, helping them build financial resilience, cultivate talent, strengthen leadership and sustain culturally vibrant programs such as jazz mentorship.  Additional resources encourage businesses to adopt sustainable practices that balance social, environmental and economic interests, promoting industry diversification and leadership development.  Democracy efforts aim to increase voter registration and turnout, improve election administration and combat misinformation, particularly in communities historically affected by voter suppression.

The application process begins with a conversation with program staff to discuss alignment.  The governing board reviews proposals three times a year—typically in January, May and September—and decisions can take four to six months from the initial discussion.  Eligible projects demonstrate a clear connection to the program areas and exhibit strong governance, financial accountability and community impact.  Organizations envisioning a resilient Great Lakes ecosystem or a culturally vibrant Southeast Michigan are particularly encouraged to explore this opportunity.
